How Long Does THC Stay in Your System?
Days for an occasional smoker, weeks for a daily one — and the test type changes the answer completely. Here are the real detection windows, and what actually moves them.
Short answer: roughly 3 days for a one-off, 30 days or more for a daily smoker — on a urine test. Change the test and the answer changes completely. The reason the range is so wide is that tests don't look for THC at all.
THC leaves your blood in hours. The metabolite it leaves behind can sit in fat for weeks.
What tests actually measure
Standard screens look for THC-COOH, a metabolite your body creates as it breaks THC down. It's fat-soluble, so it's stored in fat tissue and released gradually. That's the whole explanation for the gap between how long you feel high (1-3 hours) and how long you test positive (days to weeks).
Detection windows by test
Urine — the common one: ~3 days occasional · 5-7 days a few times a week · 10-15 days daily · 30+ days heavy daily.
Blood: 1-2 days typically; longer in heavy users. Measures recent use, not history.
Saliva: 24-72 hours. Often used for roadside and workplace spot checks.
Hair: up to ~90 days. The longest window, and the least affected by anything you do.
Ranges, not guarantees. Individual results vary widely — treat the top of each range as your planning number, not the bottom.
What moves the number
Frequency — by far the biggest factor. Daily use compounds storage.
Dose and potency — more THC in means more metabolite to clear.
Body fat — the metabolite is stored in fat, so composition matters.
Metabolism, hydration and activity — real but modest effects.
Frequency dominates everything else. A daily smoker who cuts to once a week still carries a backlog. Someone who has never smoked before clears one session in days.
Hemp-derived doesn't change the result
A drug test measures the compound, not its legality. Heated THCa becomes delta-9 THC and produces the same THC-COOH as any other cannabis. Farm Bill compliance is a legal status, not a biological one — the lab has no idea where your flower came from. We cover this directly in does THCa show up on a drug test.
If you are subject to testing, the only safe plan is not to use. Nothing on this page is a workaround.
Can you speed it up?
Not dependably. Time is the only method that works. Hydration, exercise and diet shift things at the margins. Detox products are largely unproven. And loading up on water right before a test tends to produce a dilute sample, which many programmes treat as a failure outright. Our fuller take is in how to clear THC from your system.
If you're simply waiting out a session rather than a test, the timeline is much shorter — see how long a high lasts and how to sober up from a high.
General information, not medical or legal advice. If your job or licence depends on a drug screen, don't use THC products.

Frequently asked
It depends on how often you use and which test is run. Urine, the most common test, typically detects occasional use for about 3 days and heavy daily use for 30 days or more. Blood detects 1 to 2 days, saliva 1 to 3 days, and hair up to about 90 days.
Tests do not look for THC itself. They look for THC-COOH, a metabolite your body stores in fat and releases slowly. THC leaves the bloodstream within hours, but the metabolite lingers for days or weeks, which is why the detection window far outlasts the high.
Yes. A standard test measures the compound, not its legal source. Heated THCa becomes delta-9 THC and produces the same metabolite as any other cannabis. Federal legality offers no protection on a drug screen, so if you are tested, do not use it.
Frequency of use is by far the biggest factor, followed by dose and potency. Body fat percentage matters because the metabolite is stored in fat, and metabolism, hydration and exercise all shift the timeline modestly. Two people using identically can still test differently.
Not reliably. Time is the only dependable method. Hydration, exercise and diet make marginal differences, and detox products are largely unproven. Drinking large amounts of water before a test can also flag a sample as dilute, which is often treated as a failed result.
For a genuinely one-off use, a urine test is usually clear within about 3 days, though some people take up to a week. Occasional users sit at the short end of every window; regular users should assume far longer regardless of how little they used most recently.

Education2 minHow Long Does a THC High Last? (2026 Timeline)
A smoked or vaped THC high usually peaks within 10 minutes and lasts about 1–3 hours; THC edibles run 4–8 hours. This guide breaks down how long a THC high lasts by method, what changes the duration, and how to come down faster if you need to.
Education3 minTHC Gummies vs Smoking: Which Suits You?
Gummies and flower deliver the same compound by very different routes. Inhaling works in minutes and fades in one to three hours; edibles take up to ninety minutes, last far longer, and hit harder because your liver converts THC into a stronger compound. Here's how to pick the right one.
Education3 minAre THC Gummies Legal?
Hemp-derived THC gummies are federally legal when the finished product contains no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight. Because that limit is a percentage of weight, not a cap on milligrams, a compliant gummy can carry a real dose. Here's how that works, and why your state still decides.
